Chapter 14

Gargoyles, Flirting, and Lawyers, Oh, My

If happy little songbirds showed up, he’d have had to chase them away on principle.

The thought made James grin as he sat perched on the roof the following morning, dangerously tempted to think poetic things about the sunrise. It felt a little odd to be up here when he wasn’t brooding—though that was best done at night—but at the moment it would take real effort to even be annoyed.

In fact, part of the reason he’d come up here was to hide in case he decided to do something ridiculous, like break into song. Beauty might be astonishingly willing to kiss him on a regular basis, but even the bravest souls fled in terror when he tried to hit a high note.

Apparently, the poets hadn’t lied when it came to this whole romance thing. Oddly enough, that thought almost managed to be sobering. He’d thought he was in love with Juliana, but one (okay, five) kisses from Beauty and he felt cheerful enough to frighten himself. If this euphoria collapsed, how hard would he hit bottom?

Worse, he wasn’t sure what the next step should be. Juliana had essentially moved herself into the position of his significant other, and before that, dating had fallen somewhere below polishing the silverware on his list of life priorities. James’s grin returned at the sound of Beauty’s voice, and he leaned forward enough to see her head poking out of the window just beneath him. “No statues, I promise. Though if you ever want to experience tossing one off the roof yourself, just say the word and I’ll sneak both you and the trollish goddess of cleaning products up here whenever you want.”

Beauty considered this, then her brow furrowed. “I didn’t know there was a trollish goddess of cleaning products.”

“There isn’t, except in the imagination of one of my great-great-uncles. He was obsessed with soap, and he wanted to create a worthy deity for it.”

She just looked at him for a moment. “I can never tell whether you’re serious or not.” She leaned a little further out of the window, eyeing the roof with a certain amount of speculation. “Could you really get me up there without both of us falling to our deaths?”

James considered a few possible options he might use to get her safely up on the roof with him. Then
